What is PostgreSQL?

PostgreSQL, also known as Postgres, is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) released under a BSD-style license and is thus free, open source software. As with many other open source programs, PostgreSQL is not controlled by any single company, but has a global community of developers and companies to develop it. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows.

The program runs on a host’s server, so in order to use a web application that has a Postgres database backend, your host must support it. In web hosting accounts, pgAdmin or phpPgAdmin (a free web-based interface based on phpMySQL) is often used to access and administer your PostgreSQL databases.
