What is MySQL?
MySQL, which stands for My Structured Query Language, is the world’s most popular open source relational database software. MySQL code uses C and C++. It works on many different system platforms, including FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Microsoft Windows and more. All major programming languages with language-specific APIs include Libraries for accessing MySQL databases.
The MySQL project has made its source code available under the terms of the GNU General Public License, as well as under a variety of proprietary agreements.
The program runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases. MySQL is often used in free software projects (especially in conjunction with PHP) that require a full-featured database management system, such as WordPress, phpBB and others, and is often maintenance free (meaning you just install the software, like WordPress, and use it with no database management or tweaking required). It is also used on very high-profile websites including Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo! and YouTube. In web hosting accounts, phpMyAdmin, a free web-based interface, is typically used to access and administer MySQL databases.
