What is Microsoft FrontPage Web Hosting?
FrontPage Server Extensions are server-side scripts that extend the functionality of Microsoft FrontPage. These extensions support features such as hit counters, data collection, e-mail processing, and database processing. To use these features on your web pages, your hosting provider must support FrontPage Server Extensions.
A server-side is a script type of computer code that runs on the web server as opposed to running in the user’s browser. They are used to perform tasks on web pages, such as incrementing a “number of visitors” counter each time there is a new visitor. Web scripts can be written in several script languages. One advantage is that scripts do not need to be compiled to be run, making them more lightweight.
It is a common misconception that you must use Windows hosting if you are using Microsoft FrontPage or FrontPage Server Extensions. This is not the case. FrontPage Extensions work perfectly on the more popular and less expensive Linux hosting platforms. As for HTML websites created in the FrontPage program – it is just a web page editor that creates the same HTML pages as any other web page editor. Those pages can be hosted on any platform you choose… Linux, Windows or other.
In 2006, Microsoft released Expression Web, part of the Expression Studio suite of programs, as a replacement for FrontPage. Expression Web is more compliant with W3C CSS and HTML standards. Therefore it does not use proprietary server-side extensions like FrontPage did. Even though FrontPage’s last version was 2003 (which uses the FrontPage 2002 extensions), many hosts still support it because of its popularity as a web design tool.
We fully expect FrontPage web hosting support to be phased out in the next few years as it becomes more outdated and people update their websites.
