The Best Learn MySQL Book

learn MySQLMySQL (pronounced My S-Q-L) is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). A database is a structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer system. A relational database matches data by using common characteristics found within the data set. That data set is stored in separate data tables as opposed to one large table. The resulting groups of data are organized and are much easier for people to understand. SQL stands for “Structured Query Language”, which is the most common standardized language used to access databases (defined by the ANSI/ISO SQL Standard).

To input, manipulate, view, and process data stored in a computer database, a database management system is required. The MySQL database management system runs as a server providing multi-user access to databases. The MySQL development project has made its source code available under the terms of the GNU General Public License. However, to embed MySQL code into commercial applications for sale as their own software packages, a commercial license from Sun Microsystems (soon to be owned by Oracle) is necessary.

Free software applications that require a full-featured database management system often use MySQL. Such projects include WordPress, phpBB and other software built on the LAMP platform. MySQL is also used in many high-profile, large-scale websites including Wikipedia, Google, Drupal and Facebook. Its popularity for use with web applications is closely tied to the popularity of PHP, which is often combined with MySQL. Several high-traffic web sites, including Flickr, Facebook, Wikipedia, Google (though not for searches), Nokia and YouTube use MySQL for data storage and logging of user data.

Description: “MySQL is a very popular relational database for a number of reasons: it is free for most applications; while not open source it is heavily used by the open source community; and it runs easily on Windows and UNIX. The author’s approach is to use two sample databases to explain SQL (structured query) databases with Perl, PHP, and C; administering MySQL; and security. The volume is superbly organized into 12 chapters and 10 appendices and contains a concise table of contents and a comprehensive 50-page index. It is peppered with references to the online HTML documentation that comes with the source and binary distributions. The first third of MySQL is an excellent instruction tool for database newbies; the second third is a detailed reference for MySQL developers; and the last third consists of clearly annotated appendices, including C, Perl and PHP interfaces.”
